Individual Psychotherapy

Many people are not sure exactly what psychotherapy is and who can benefit from it.You may feel unsure about the need to see a psychologist or have questions about the process. A consultation with a therapist helps determine if a behavior of concern is appropriate or a symptom of underlying problem that needs professional attention. It is an opportunity to gain awareness and new perspectives.

Therapy can help:

  • Improve your experience of life;
  • Increase your joy in living;
  • Boost your personal productivity;
  • You learn how to create loving, honest relationships with others;
  • Curtail or end emotional suffering;
    Stop self-defeating, painful, or destructive thinking and behavior patterns.

    We provide psychotherapy for individuals dealing with issues such as:

    • Depression
    • Anxiety
    • Relationship Issues
    • Low Self-Esteem
    • Bereavement
    • Adolescent Issues
    • Abuse and Trauma
    • Stress
    • Divorce and other difficult life transitions

Therapy For Children, Adolescents and Families

Some parents find it difficult to put their child in psychotherapy because they think it both stigmatizes the child and implies that they've failed in some way as a parent. Children don't always ask for help when they need it. Therefore, just as you would show your love for your child by taking them to a doctor when they're sick, you show that same love by finding a professional to help with their psychological or emotional problems. Seeing your child in pain, having trouble communicating with them or other parenting issues can disrupt a loving parent's life as well as the household in general. A child's adolescent years are naturally so turbulent they can arouse anxiety, confusion and pressure in both child and parent.

We can work with your child or adolescent on issues such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, behavioral problems, family conflicts, social skills and sibling rivalry. At the same time, we can work with you, the parent(s) to resolve family conflicts and improve communication skills so that you and your children can relate better.

Therapy For Couples

Whether you're fighting a lot or just feel things aren't the way they used to be between you, working with you as a couple we can help clarify what forces are behind the issues that both hinder and enhance your life together. Some of the problems often dealt with in couples therapy include:

  • Difficulty with Intimacy
  • Conflict resolution
  • Communication issues
  • Anger or resentment
  • Compromise
  • Empathy
  • Fidelity
  • Trust issues

Group Therapy

Interacting with peers, getting along with others and maintaining friendships are a vital part of adolescence. Teenagers that have strong interpersonal skills will have significantly higher self esteem, academic achievement and overall happiness. We are providing a Peer Process Social Skills group for rising 7th and 8th graders. The group will focus on initiating and maintaining conversations through a peer process to gain essential life skills. Please contact us for more information, referrals and to enroll in one of our groups.

Psychological Assessments

Fairfax Counseling Services provides comprehensive psychological and psychoeducational assessments for children and adolescents. We provide psychoeducational testing of learning difficulties, dyslexia, ADHD, and cognitive abilities. We also provide psychological evaluations for intelligence, personality and diagnostic clarification.

Our thorough assessments can help determine why a person is struggling in school or at work. Testing is a helpful tool in providing an objective look at what someone is experiencing. We can help students and their families identify and understand the cognitive and academic strengths and problems that affect learning in school and college.
